Math: Solve with Unlike Mixed Numbers
Today’s math lesson focused on consolidating all of the skills we have been working on with fractions.
- We have added and subtracted with like and unlike fractions.
- We have added and subtracted with Mixed Numbers.
- We have found common denominators and the least common denominator.
- We have discussed the importance of multipliers and divisors, and that if you multiply or divide the denominator you must multiply the numerator and vice versa.
Today we were finding common denominators in order to add or subtract Mixed Numbers. The steps we discussed are:
1. Find the operation… (Do I add or subtract?)
2. Find the Common Denominator (LCD; we can do this by multiplying the denominators, or finding the multiples of each of the denominators in order to find the LEAST common denominator)
3. Ungroup (if necessary; only in subtraction is this step needed.)
4. Solve (carry out the addition or subtraction)
5. Simplify (Final answer should have no improper fractions, and no large equivalent fractions. Find the simplest form.)
Students are expected to show all of their work.
